The instrument, designated FPSS, is modular. It uses a new birefringent filter of the Lyot type, which has a spectral resolution of 45,000 (or 0.13Å at 5800Å), a field of 32mm diameter, a 0.033 rad. aperture, and a high 20 % transparency. It is tunable from 5000Å to 6700Å and gives a diffraction limited angular resolution. This monochromator is combined with a spectral profile modular to yield several configurations of spectral transmission bands associated with solar spectral lines. Doppler effect produces then quantitative filtergrams of the longitudinal velocities over the solar surface. A 100 m s-1 velocity delivers a signal of 1.4 % with the Na D1 line and of around 0.7 % with Fe Fraunhofer type lines. Other combinations of images produce filtergrams of the line profile parameters, separately for the depth d, the strength S and the width W. A Stokes parameter modulator is placed at the entrance of the fflter to produce vector polarization mappings over the solar surface. The circular polarization of Zeeman sensitive lines gives images of the longitudinal magnetic field with a sensitivity of 350 Gauss for a 1 % signal. Transverse magnetic fields measurements are contemplated. The instrument is presently used at Observatoire de Meudon with a solar refractor, 28 cm in diameter, directly pointed at the sun, diffraction limited and polarization-free.
