We investigate a spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmological model with a modified holographic Ricci dark energy (MHRDE), which can be written as a modified conservation equation (MCE) for dark matter and dark energy. The compatibility of the MCE and the whole conservation equation (WCE) relates the equation of state of both components. We develop an interacting model for dark matter and MHRDE where the interation is linear in both dark energy densities, the total energy density and its derivative. Using the $\chi^2$--statistical method on the Hubble function we obtain the best fit value of the $(H_{0}, \om_{s}, z_{acc})$ parameters, where the critical redshift $z_{acc}=0.89$ appears to be consistent with BAO and CMB data. We find that a MHRDE with $0.25R<\ro_x<0.27R$ gives acceptable energy density parameters. Using the best fit values of $(\Omega_{c0}, \om_{s})$, we calculate the theoretical distance modulus for confronting with the observational data of SNe Ia; in broad terms the model adjusts well for small redshift and large redshift. The model enters in the accelerated phase faster than the $\Lambda$CDM one and it could be a good candidate to alleviate the coincidence problem. Also we examine the age crisis at high redshift associated with the old quasar APM 08279+5255.
