Stellar Envelopes: Convection

Scientific paper

When the ususal mixing-length theory is applied in the calculation of convection envelope of late giants and supergiants, it is found that the convection becomes supersonic in the top of convection zone. The authors review the original mixing-length theory and give a set of modified mixing-length formula. New theory predicts a shallower convection envelope for a given supergiant in comparison with the usual mixing-length theory. The supersonic convection is effectively restrained. The red supergiant branch moves to lower effective temperature by 100 - 400 K.
