X-Ray Surveys: Stellar Content, X-Ray Surveys: Galaxy
Scientific paper
The authors present a numerical model designed to predict the stellar content of flux limited soft X-ray surveys. This X-ray count model is based on the Besançon stellar population model of the Galaxy and takes into account the most recent X-ray luminosity functions derived from ROSAT observations of young galactic clusters. The authors compare predicted and observed log(N)-log(S) curves in a low galactic latitude region of the ROSAT All-Sky Survey (RASS) and show that observational data are in good agreement with model predictions if one assumes a constant stellar formation rate and a power law index equal 0.7 for the initial mass function below 1 Msun. In order to understand the nature of the emitting population, they have also performed a survey of photospheric lithium abundances which confirms the youth of the X-ray active stars detected in the RASS.
