We study galaxy clustering and substructure in the halo model framework, where gravitational clustering is described in terms of dark matter halos. In the halo model, galaxies and halos are biased tracers of the underlying dark matter distribution of the host halos they inhabit. At small scales, clustering statistics are dominated by the internal structure of halos and local astrophysical processes. At large scales, on the other hand, clustering correlations are the result of density perturbation theory combined with an extended spherical collapse model. We present a novel technique to link the distribution of galaxies to that of dark matter halos. We use recent observations of galaxy luminosity functions and galaxy clustering, with theoretical models of the abundance and hierarchical clustering of halos, in order to give a more realistic analysis of the halo occupation distribution and correlation function. In addition, our approach could also be useful for numerical simulations and gravitational lensing statistics.
