Mars Surface: Models, Mars Surface: Scattering

Scientific paper

On the basis of the digital map of the Mars surface altitude, a two-component model of its surface irregularities is developed. The model represents an arbitrary realization of the surface altitude as a superposition of large-scale and small-scale components whose ordinates have an almost Gaussian distribution. Formulas for the average scattered field and effective scattering coefficients are derived and analyzed that take into account the altitude distribution functions of the large-scale and small-scale components.
