A basic model is developed which describes the initial state of a terrestrial planet and the formation of mantle and core in it. Emphasis is placed on the energetic aspect of the problem. The discussion covers the processes of heat production and heat transfer which accompany the gravitational differentiation of the interior matter at the early stages of the earth's evolution. Results are presented on the calculation of thermal history with allowance for heat convection and energy production in the presence of gravitational differentiation. A major conclusion is that if one assumes the primary matter to be divided into heavy and light components in a proportion equal to the ratio of present mantle and core masses, the earth's matter should have almost completely undergone a melting stage.
