Interplanetary Magnetic Field: Earth Magnetosphere

Scientific paper

The results of model calculations of the diffusion of the transverse component of the IMF into the Earth's magnetosphere are given. It is obtained that the penetration coefficient of the IMF into the magnetospheric tail is equal to 0.06 at a distance of 25 RE and to 0.12 at a distance of 180 RE from the Earth. It is concluded that the penetration of the y component of the magnetic field into portions of the tail detected in the experiment can be explained by a process of diffusion of the IMF from the solar wind.
