An analysis of spectrograms of AM CVn obtained during 1978-1980 is presented. It is found that the wavelengths and intensities of He absorption lines vary over a much longer period than the photometric period of 17.5 min. A new model of the system is proposed, consisting of two identical DB white dwarfs, one of which has a strong magnetic field with B greater than 1-million G. It is shown that the 17.5-min period is the axial-rotation period of the magnetized white dwarf; and that the accretion rate in the system is approximately 10 to the 16th g/sec and is probably variable. The energy distribution in the continuum is found to be nonthermal, but according to the absorption spectrum the effective temperature of the white dwarfs forming the system is approximately 20,000 K.
