In order to interpret infrared observations of parent molecules in comets, the authors have developed an excitation model which takes into account excitation by collisions and pumping of the fundamental bands of vibration by the infrared solar radiation field. For abundant species such as H2O or CO2, the model includes radiation trapping in the rotational and ro-vibrational lines. This model allows the authors' to derive infrared synthetic spectra for various species and observational conditions and to interpret recent observations of comet P/Halley.
