A mathematical model for the distribution of ionospheric plasma along a geomagnetic flux tube is presented, and then used to investigate the evolution of an ionospheric hole formed under the effect of an anthropogenic contaminant: water. Attention is given to the role of ionospheric-plasmaspheric exchange under such conditions; the existence of a secondary hole during the sunset period is established, with allowance made for the formation of neutral hydrogen; and time estimates for the transition process are obtained. It is shown that modeling the effects of anthropogenic water on the vertical distribution of electron density, performed with allowance made for processes along the flux tube, substantially expands and changes the understanding of ionospheric-hole dynamics.
