Acceleration Of Particles, Stars: Individual: Am Her, Stars: White Dwarfs, Gamma Rays: Theory
Scientific paper
A model, based on the acceleration of progenitor particles (protons) at a plane parallel shock and the conventional beam-dumping mechanism for photon production, is proposed to explain the reported phase-modulated TeV gamma-ray signal from AM Herculis. The system characteristics, in particular, its size and the magnetic field strength and the rotation period of the white- dwarf primary, do not favour known acceleration mechanisms except the diffusive shock acceleration process, occurring at a distance of ˜20 white-dwarf radii away from the primary. It is further shown that the proposed model is consistent with the observed morphology of the gamma-ray light curve and its apparent correlation with the V-band circular polarization curve of the system.
