We present results from a model describing the diffusion and subsequent reconnection of magnetic field lines behind a CME. This model provides the basis for an explanation of the ``magnetic field magnitude catastrophe" effect, which describes the build up of magnetic flux in the heliosphere due to closed CME field lines being dragged out into the heliosphere. This predicted buildup is not observed, indicating some unknown source of reconnection. We propose that the dynamic nature of the CME will impede the formation of a current sheet behind the CME, allowing the CME and open field lines to diffuse and reconnect, thus reducing heliospheric magnetic flux. We model this process with a Crank-Nicholson routine and find results in good agreement with the data.
