The orbital evolution of a large planet is investigated to determine why the 2:1 synchronism has never been observed for any planet in the solar system. The planet's rotation is analyzed on the assumption that its rotation rate is nearly double its rate of revolution, and conditions for a stable 2:1 synchronism are obtained. It is concluded that this synchronism has not been realized in the solar system because the larger bodies did not have a sufficiently large angle between their axes of rotation and the normal to their orbital planes at the time of the system's formation and, therefore, could not be locked into that synchronism.
