Recently Borghesi, Bussoletti, and Colangeli have suggested that unidentified infrared (UIR) bands in interstellar grains may be accounted for by a mixture of hydrogenated amorphous carbon (HAC) and a collection of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon molecules (PAHs). Transmission spectra of HAC and different PAH collections have been measured in the laboratory. It appears that transmission spectra of mixtures composed by HAC and PAH collections appear to match several astronomical observations, although they are still not able to fit the entire family of UIR bands. The laboratory data have been used in emission to simulate the spectrum of the planetary nebula NGC 7027, resulting in a quite good agreement.
