Techniques for quantifying the distance to an isolated galaxy based on available data are reviewed. The data on the object is limited to the magnitude, the wavelength of the emissions, and the time. It is shown that approximate methods must be used due to observational data containing a number of variables which are not independent. One of the methods considers a number of partially dependent parameters but treats them as independent, giving a range of possible distances while a second technique analyzes the dependent parameters to obtain the fundamental independent parameters. The classical and global, i.e., regression of principle components, Sosies method, and automatic classification of distances, are described.
