Stellar Oscillations, Solar-Like Stars
Scientific paper
The necessity of finding a signal buried in noise is a common problem in astrophysics where noise limited observations are usually preceding interesting discoveries. In particular we are interested in the detection of p-mode oscillation frequencies of solar-like stars which, at least for the moment, have a very poor S/N ratio. In this work, it is shown that to find this type of signals in time series observations with a S/N defined as σsignal/(σsignal+noise) as small as 0.0012 is indeed possible. The method uses the p-mode frequency signature in the asymptotic regime (n>>l) where the modes of like l are "almost" uniformly separated in frequency. The departure from an exact frequency spacing and the lowest signal's amplitude detected are trade off parameters.
