The Langmuir probe is a standard instrument for plasma diagnostics in the ionosphere. By the evaluation of full probe characteristics it is possible to measure electron temperature Te, density ne and the plasma potential UP. In many cases the sensor surface is covered by a thin layer of water which leads to a distortion of the probe characteristic. The contamination layer can be described by a parallel circuit of a resistor (R) and a capacitor (C). We have modeled this situation by a nonlinear equivalent circuit, and the influence on the evaluation of Te, ne and UP was analysed. Several methods of varying the probe voltage are compared with respect to the influence of the contamination layer. The voltage sweep used with the Langmuir probes in the DEOS campaign enables us to determine C and R from actual data measured on flight F06. Furthermore, with the knowledge of the parameters C and R of the contamination layer, it becomes possible to recover the true probe characteristics from the distorted characteristics measured on flight F06, resulting in higher electron densities and closer agreement with independent instruments.
