A new extraction technique is described for distinguishing detrital from non-detrital fractions of trace elements in reduced sediments. The material is treated with hydrogen peroxide, whereby sulphides are dissolved and organic matter partly destroyed. Subsequent treatment of the residue with acid ammonium oxalate in ultra-violet light dissolves some of the iron and aluminium. This treatment is compared with acetic acid as an extractant of trace elements in Lias shales.
