A method is described for searching for optical pulsars and other short-period phenomena in astronomical objects. No knowledge of the period is required and the search can be carried out with portable equipment at any reasonably large telescope. A photon counter collects samples from the object and a real-time fast Fourier transform is carried out on successive sets of 1024 samples. The result is stored and displayed graphically and the dispays updated continuously as new data arrive, are transformed and added into the store. The sensitivity of the method is derived theoretically, and the results of laboratory and field tests are given, showing satisfactory agreement with this theory.
