Statistics on the plasmapause are obtained by combining the time history of the magnetospheric convection electric field with the plasmasphere refill response time. A simple refill model defined in terms of the plasmasphere refill rate, the rotational speed of earth, and the strength of the geomagnetic dipole is used, and the magnetospheric convection electric field is determined from that of the solar wind by a simple merging assumption. Statistics of the observed solar-wind convection electric field are then employed to predict statistics of the plasmapause distance that are in reasonable agreement with observations. Applications of the method are discussed for situations where the geophysical parameters in the model are varied and direct observations are impossible.
