Scientific paper

A method for calculating the magnetospheric energy output parameter U(T) that is completely independent of the epsilon parameter or any analogous solar wind quantity is described. This method may be used to generate time series of U(T) values for comparison with epsilon or any other assumed form of the solar wind energy input function. This would allow a test of epsilon = U(T) or similar hypotheses without encountering the problems of circular reasoning or artificial interdependence of variables.
