From the lack of absorption of 1-10 MeV gamma rays in the nuclei of the radio galaxy Cen A and the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 and in the quasar 3C 273, lower limits are set on the mass of the central structures in these objects. Actual values for the mass should become feasible to estimate when observations of active galaxy nuclei are obtained at photon energies of at least 10 MeV.
