A method is proposed for estimating the distances of active galaxy nuclei, based on a simplified model of a compact radio source in which relativistic particles ejected on opposite sides of the nucleus are controlled by a magnetic field. Correlations are sought between time-delayed features in the radio luminosity curve and features in the optical light curve, and long-baseline interferometric data on the angular sizes of radio sources are used. As an example, each optical flare in the nucleus of the radio galaxy NGC 1275 (Perseus A) is shown to be followed by two (or perhaps four) radio flares delayed by intervals of several years, depending on the radio frequency. Estimates are obtained for the angular size and inclination angle of this radio source, as well as its distance. The same method may be applied to determine the distances of BL Lacertae objects and quasars.
