Measurements of the variations of the instrumental zenith distance obtained from a Danjon astrolabe when used for solar observations are presented. The instrument contains a permanently fixed glass-ceramic prism used in conjunction with a movable, transparent prism to allow the measurement of solar transit times at various zenith distances. Variations of the angle of the adjustable prism, which determine the instrumental constant, were measured by determining the autocollimation due to reflection from the entry faces of the prism, and compared to stellar observations. Results of the autocollimation and stellar measurements are found to exhibit a high correlation (correlation coefficient 0.97), indicating the utility of the autocollimation method in the elimination of instrumental zenith errors in solar observations.
