Cosmic Rays: Muons

Scientific paper

Reports on the detection of cosmic-ray muons by means of a liquid-scintillator detector and electronic equipment that was partly constructed by the authors for pedagogical use. They describe the use of this equipment to measure the individual decay times of about 1.3 million positive and negative muons. They do a detailed data analysis to extract the values of the plus to minus charge rate of cosmic-ray muons; the capture probability per unit time of negative muons by carbon atoms and the lifetime of the muon.
