A new lunar meteorite has been found in a desert region of Australia, Calcalong Creek, which is comparable to Antarctica in its ability to preserve meteorites of different types. The Calcalong Creek meteorite is a lunar breccia containing both highland and mare materials. While the Apollo and Luna missions respectively sampled only 5 percent of the lunar crust; lunar meteorites could by contrast furnish a presumptively random sample. The possibility that the Antarctic meteorite population could in some ways be biased is addressed in light of the present meteorite's implications for the transfer of impact ejecta.
