Midas, an Apollo-type asteroid, has a highly eccentric orbit (0.650) that crosses the earth's and takes the asteroid as close to the sun as 0.622 AU at perihelion and as far as 2.930 AU at aphelion in a period of 865 days. The inclination of its orbit (39.8 deg) is also very high and its line of nodes and lines of apsides are nearly perpendicular. These factors account for the two oppositions observed in Midas during one year, its looping track, and its erratic speeds. Midas will approach the earth to within 0.07 AU (10,500,000 km) on September 21, 1987 at a speed of 13 deg per day, appearing like a star of 13th magnitude.
