Intercosmos-19 data indicate strong longitudinal changes in the electron concentration (up to a factor of 10-11) and latitude of the main ionospheric trough minimum in the near-midnight ionosphere during quiet periods. It is shown here that these changes are largely determined by the noncoincidence of the geographic and geomagnetic poles and by the geomagnetic field parameters (longitudinal effect), the contributions of these factors being approximately equal. This leads to longitudinal changes of the contributions of the neutral wind and of the electric field to the formation of the main ionospheric trough.
