The results of a monitoring of SiO masers carried out by radio telescope from June 1984 to February 1987 are presented. Three supergiants, two semiregular variables, nine Mira variables, and the star-forming region Ori A were observed every 20-30 days, constituting the most closely and uniformly spaced monitoring ever published. The SiO maser emission presents strong time variation roughly following the IR variability. The repetitiveness of the SiO curves is relatively poor, with differences between maxima as high as a factor of 2-3. The existence of missing maxima was detected a few times. Variations of the velocity of the peaks during phases of high emission were detected in W Hya, with an amplitude of about 2 km/s and without clear dependence on the phase or line intensity. The supergiants and semiregular variables also exhibited some repetitiveness. The SiO variability results are interpreted as suggesting that SiO masers are formed very close to the stellar atmosphere.
