During the course of systematic observations of active stars carried out at the European Southern Observatory (La Silla, Chile), an intense optical flare, lasting about one rotation period, was detected on the K1 IIIp FK Com-type star YY Men + HD 32918 (Psub rot - 9.5476 days). The present UBV (RI)c data represent one of the first broad-band photometric observations of an optical flare on FK Com-type stars. Moreover, the observed event probably is the longest optical flare ever recorded for any class of active stars. The total amount of released energy in the UBV (RI)c bands was estimated to be 1.8 x 10 exp 39 erg, and its possible origin is briefly discussed.
