A comprehensive list of the molecules identified in the interstellar medium up to September, 1979 is presented. The list provides information on the first discovery, subsequent surveys, sources, optical and radio spectral lines observed, spectra, column densities and physical conditions of the 90 identified molecules. Factors tending to confirm the detection of a molecule and ambiguities in the assignment of molecules to circumstellar and interstellar regions are also briefly indicated.
