Venus, Planetary Observation

Scientific paper

The accompanying CCD images of Venus have particular interest for the support they give a certain type of visual observation that has always aroused doubt amongst watchers of the planet. Taken on 1996 October 4 at 0440hrs UT by Luigi Testa, Secretary of the Planet Section, Unione Astrofili Italiani, they show projecting above the mean contour of the northern limb, a distinct white patch not unlike the phenomenon reported by Greenwood and Dobbins in March 1985 (see J. Brit. Astron. Assoc., 106(4), 181-182 [1996]).
