UBV light curves of the massive eclipsing binary RY Sct are analyzed. Each band of the photoelectric observations of Ciatti et al. (1980) is analyzed separately in terms of a model in which both the primary and the secondary are treated as tidally distorted triaxial ellipsoids which show gravity and limb darkening as well as the reflection effect. The computations indicate that the eclipses observed are partial (inclination angle about 75 deg) and that the primary minimum is an occultation. The photometric elements derived indicate a most probable BO primary radius and luminosity of 29 solar radii and 10 to the 5.8 solar luminosities, respectively, with a temperature of 30,000 K, primary mass of 38 solar masses and secondary mass of 47 solar masses. The Roche-lobe-filling primary is thus considered to be a supergiant, while the secondary object, with dimensions greater than those of its corresponding Roche lobes, is found to be inconsistent with a simple ellipsoidal model. It is suggested that RY Sct is currently undergoing mass transfer to the secondary on its way to becoming a Wolf-Rayet system.
