Light pollution, the bane of both amateur and professional astronomers, is often discussed among astronomers, but rarely with first semester students. A number of years ago, the author developed a laboratory exercise that introduces students to the issue of light pollution. This laboratory exercise not only covers light pollution, but covers areas of spectral characteristics of astronomical objects in general. Student feedback of this laboratory exercise has generally been quite positive, with students feeling that they have learned something of value to them to take from the class.
