A new instrument for the study of diffuse soft X-ray features and hot spots in the X-ray sky using two large-area gas-flow proportional counters is described. The counter comprises a multianode and multilayered proportional chamber having anti-coincidence shield on three sides. A schematic drawing of the end view of one of the multiwire proportional counters is given, as is a schematic arrangement of interwiring for high voltage supply and signal pick-up. In addition to a block diagram of the on-board data handling system for the X-ray payload, there is a table setting forth the physical characteristics of the proportional counter.
