Kinematic, spectrophotometric, and photometric observations of the barred galaxy NGC 5383 made at the Observatoire de Haute Provence are analyzed. The nucleus is made up of two H II intense regions 2.6 kpc and 1.1 kpc from the central nuclear region and situated within a ring 2 kpc in radius. Radial velocities around the ring display a well-defined sinusoidal curve with a maximum displaced 15 deg from that predicted on the basis of the geometry of outer parts of the galaxy; this may be explained by a contraction velocity of about 43 km/sec. Spectra along the edge of the nucleus suggest transverse motions in the bar with a velocity of 100 km/sec at 4 kpc from the center. The velocity field for slit positions bisecting the nucleus is symmetric, with a sharp discontinuity of 50 km/sec between the nucleus and the bar. The velocity observations are inconsistent with solid body rotation. The distribution of mass has been analyzed assuming radial motion in the bar; the calculated mass within a 14 kpc radius is about 10 to the 10th solar masses. Iso-intensity tracings reveal H II intense regions at the ends of the bar.
