Scientific paper

The paper reports an optical jet extending 10 arc min from the elliptical galaxy M89. Two low surface brightness shells partly surround the galaxy, and a much fainter arc is found 13 arc min away. Procedures used to detect the jet on plates are described. Available information relevant to determination of the nature of the jet is discussed, and it is suggested that this task will be difficult because of the low surface brightness.
