The VisAD approach to scientific visualization is to provide an abstract view of data and displays that can be adapted to virtually any scientific observations and simulations. The Java approach is to provide an abstract computer and operating system that can be implemented on any computing platform. The Java / VisAD software combination will be capable of connecting scientists' diverse computing equipment and diverse data sets, and supporting shared, collaborative user interfaces. The C implementation of VisAD confronted users with the full generality of its data and display models through its user interface. The Java implementation will instead support a variety of discipline-specific user interfaces.
