An account is given of the Apollo 8 mission around the Moon and back to Earth. Many details are given about the physical condition of the astronauts and about their reactions to the flight. The title of this article in based upon astronaut Anders' experience while in the shadow of the Moon. He saw that the sky was full of stars. Looking back over his shoulder there were no stars, only an arc of blackness. The hole in the stars was the Moon.
