A calibration technique that uses a diffuser illuminated by an auxiliary light source is described which was developed to determine the spectral energy density of illumination at the entrance pupil of a telescope-spectrophotometer system. The spectral energy density of diffuser luminosity, which is required for calculations, is measured by direct comparison with the spectral energy density of the luminosity of a low-temperature standard light source (an absolutely black body at the melting point of gold or a tungsten ribbon-filament lamp). It is shown that the errors in the spectral energy density of diffuser luminosity consist only of errors in the spectral energy density of the standard-source luminosity (about 0.2% to 0.5%) plus errors in the photoelectric luminosity comparison (about 0.1% to 0.2%) and do not exceed 0.3% to 0.6%.
