A new design of airglow spectrograph is described. One has been used to observe the visible night airglow, and examples of spectra are given which show the Meinel bands of hydroxyl as far as the yellow and blue/green region, and including the two lines of the forbidden atomic nitrogen transition at 5198/5200 A. Exposure times were 45 min and the dispersion was 0.43 A/pixel, a resolving power more than five times greater than has previously been published. Details are given of the dimensions, positions and powers of the optical components used in the prototype.
