In this paper, we describe a position-locating algorithm for a CCD-based celestial-object tracker. This algorithm is highly precise in the subpixel range and can be executed in a time comparable with the CCD exposure time. We use a method of position locating by comparison of a slowly varying model of the desired object image with real-time CCD data. Our method is particularly suitable for space and for ground-based applications where processing of data-transfer power is limited. We provide an example of the application of this algorithm to a Sun sensor, which requires both a very high update rate and high accuracy.
