We propose to obtain a 15-hour high dispersion spectrum of the important hot white dwarf PG1159-035, using back-to-back European and US1 shifts. This star lies at the juxtaposition of the hottest white dwarfs, central stars of planetary nebulae, and the hot subdwarf O stars. It is also the prototype of a new class of pulsating stars. Knowing its precise H-R diagram position is crucial to utilizing detailed studies of the pulsational properties, and the atmospheric composition may be useful in assessing the driving mechanism. Determination of its stellar parameters requires careful study of absorption features lying at SWP wavelengths. The nature of weak emission lines seen in the optical may also be discernible.
