A bright knot emitting strong forbidden S II and forbidden N II lines has been positively identified as an HH object within a neutral lane in M16. This has been called M16 HH 1. Two dominant components of collisionally ionized plasma (shock velocity approximately 85 km/sec and pre-shock density approximately 34/cu cm) originate within this object with values of heliocentric radial velocity of approximately + 10 km/sec and approximately + 90 km/sec. A cavity with flowing walls produced by the wind from a cool star is proposed to explain these observations.
