Over the last few decades our understanding of how students learn best has increased dramatically. Students construct understandings by trying to fit new ideas and concepts into their prior understandings. Unfortunately these best practices are infrequently applied in the classroom or in educational outreach programs. Research indicates that instructional models, such as the BSCS 5-E's, can help students learn fundamental concepts in science. It is crucial that EPO professionals model best practices in their teacher training, and incorporate them in their education outreach or educational products. We will review the three principals of learning and the BSCS 5-E instructional model with emphasis on the crucial first stage of Engagement and list resources that can help EPO professionals and teacher engage students' ideas in science.
