It is demonstrated that the gross features of emission line profile and intensity variation in the Seyfert galaxy NGC4151 can be understood within the framework of a gravitational kinematic model which incorporates computations of the varying responses of the different emission lines to changes in the ionizing continuum flux. Theoretical profiles are presented which illustrate the main features of the profile structure and variation which are characteristic of the model. The relative changes in line strength and the associated time lag in the response of a line to a change in the continuum is shown. It is found that the profile variation shows no large preferential sidedness due to the spiralling of trapped cloud material, and that the strength-variable but velocity-stationary features in the wings of profiles result from the velocity structure of the small number of tidally distorted parent clouds contributing to the high-velocity emission.
