The state of the knowledge in each of the major areas of solar physics is discussed, noting that an examination of the outstanding scientific problems gives an idea of the direction of solar physics research in the next decade. The conclusions and recommendations of the Solar Physics Working Group and of its parent, the Astronomy Survey Committee, concerning the observational and theoretical programs that appear most likely to be scientifically productive results are reviewed. The three areas that are seen as bringing the greatest gains are the (1) development of observational techniques to probe the generation and transport of energy and the compositions and motion of the interior of the sun; (2) the study of the various 'active phenomena,' among them sunspots, the magnetic cycle, the corona, the solar wind, and solar flares, and the development of a comprehensive theory explaining the stellar rotation, magnetism and activity cycles that underlie these phenomena; and (3) the investigation of the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of the heliosphere and of its interaction with the interstellar medium and with planetary atmospheres and magnetospheres.
