NGC 3842 is a dominantly large and structurally normal supergiant elliptical galaxy within the Virgo-like cluster Abell 1367. Deep B-magnitude CCD imaging in the envelope of this galaxy has been carried out in a search for its globular cluster system. The photometry shows a significant population of clusters beginning to appear for B above 24.5 and continuing to rise in numbers to the faint limit of the data at B about 26.0. The estimated total cluster population (specific frequency) is 7-8, i.e., near the normal for Virgo-like giant ellipticals and almost a factor of two less populous than the prototypical 'high-S(N)' cluster system around M87. These results suggest that galaxy size (luminosity) or morphology are not enough by themselves to produce a high-S(N) globular cluster system. In addition, because NGC 3842 is not situated at the dynamical center of A1367, the results are consistent with the idea that central location within a rich environment is the most important single factor causing high-S(N) systems to form.
