The planetary nebula NGC 3242 is surrounded by an extremely large (18 x 24 arc minutes) low-surface-brightness shell, making NGC 3242 the planetary nebula with the second largest known angular diameter. This 'giant halo' appears to have been ejected from the central star approximately 100,000 years ago. The bright inner planetary nebula is itself a double-shell nebula, with diameters of 15 and 38 arcmin and ages of a few thousand years. The central star therefore appears to have undergone three separate phases of mass ejection.
